What is the ‘Metaverse’?


A question often asked over recent months has been around the ‘Metaverse‘ and what this may mean for online safety.

In a nutshell, the ‘Metaverse’ typically relates to the inter-connection of different parts of the online world into a singular, connected virtual environment.  This is generally described through the use of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) to provide an immersive environment where users can seamlessly move from one platform (e.g. social media, online games) to another from a single point – in some ways akin to being inside a large shopping centre versus visiting separate shops in the high street.

Whilst this is still very much in the early stages of development, it naturally brings about questions about how we can stay safe in such environments.
